LM 24 Overview

The LM 24 is one of the most practical and enduring compact motorsailers on the market, built by the renowned Danish yard LM Glassfiber A/S and widely respected for outstanding build quality and clever design. Her shallow 1m draft makes her exceptionally well suited to exploring tidal creeks, rivers, and shallow anchorages that larger vessels simply cannot reach, whilst the intelligent use of interior space makes her an ideal cruising home for two.

This particular example, Katie, offers a semi-enclosed wheelhouse arrangement that works particularly well at this size, providing weather protection at the helm without sacrificing the open, airy feel of the cockpit. If you are considering a Colvic Watson or a Fisher 25, the LM 24 is very much worth your attention as a compelling, characterful alternative.

Deck

Katie’s deck is well equipped for serious coastal cruising and sheltered-water exploration:

  • CQR anchor with approximately 30m chain
  • Manual anchor windlass
  • Lifeline gates
  • Stainless steel pushpit and pulpit
  • Stackpack mainsail cover
  • Cockpit enclosure with extra mesh sides
  • Cockpit separation cover (new 2026)
  • Boarding ladder
  • Various fenders and warps
  • Steering compass

Cabin

Below decks, the open-plan cabin offers accommodation for up to four berths. The layout features a V-berth forward that extends over the two saloon settee berths when required, a central table, a foredeck hatch for light and ventilation, and generous stowage beneath the berths. A separate heads compartment to port houses the marine toilet, with a full-height hanging locker conveniently opposite to starboard.

Steps lead up to the semi-enclosed wheelhouse, where the helm is positioned to starboard and the galley sits opposite. The galley is fitted with a Neptune two-burner gas hob and grill, a stainless steel sink with pressurised cold-water supply, a refrigerator, and ample additional stowage. The wheelhouse itself benefits from generous stowage beneath the sole and at the helm position.

The large aft cockpit provides further lockers and storage spaces, along with the original LM folding cockpit table, a thoughtful touch that makes alfresco dining a pleasure. Additional details include light beige saloon upholstery, 91 litres of freshwater capacity, and 12-volt interior lighting throughout.

Sails & Spars

Katie is masthead-rigged as a Bermudan sloop, with a deck-stepped alloy mast and boom. The standing rigging is stainless steel (renewed 2023) and the running rigging is Terylene (also renewed 2023), giving confidence that the rig is in excellent order. The slab reefing mainsail system and furling headsail make single-handed or short-handed sailing straightforward. Sail handling is supported by two sheet winches and one halyard winch on the mast.

Sails carried:

  • Mainsail
  • Genoa

Fuel capacity is approximately 90 litres.

Construction

Katie was built in 1980 by LM Glassfiber A/S in Denmark to a design by Palle Mortensen. She features a white GRP hull with a blue styling stripe, with GRP superstructure and decks finished with moulded non-slip surfaces throughout. The long keel with encapsulated ballast provides excellent directional stability and seakeeping in a range of conditions, whilst the keel-hung rudder is served by both wheel and tiller steering.
