Classic Safe Harbour 12 Overview
Developed from a design by the renowned American yacht designer B.B. Crowninshield, ‘Ethel Rose’ is an exceptional bespoke daysailer that combines classic elegance with modern construction techniques. Professionally built by her former master shipwright owner to an outstanding standard, she takes inspiration from the graceful lines of Spirit Yachts and offers the appearance and performance of a miniature J-Class yacht. Constructed using cedar strip-planked epoxy techniques, she delivers all the charm of a traditional wooden yacht whilst benefiting from the strength, durability and low maintenance of modern composite construction. Fast, responsive and easily handled by a small crew, ‘Ethel Rose’ presents a rare opportunity to acquire a unique modern classic at a fraction of the cost of commissioning a similar yacht today.

Construction
The Safe Harbour 12 is a modern interpretation of the classic Dark Harbour 12, redesigned by Paul Fisher of Selway Fisher Design to take advantage of modern construction methods whilst retaining the graceful proportions of the original B.B. Crowninshield design.
‘Ethel Rose’ has been professionally built using cedar strip planking over Lloyd’s specification Bruynzeel marine plywood with Iroko framing before being sheathed in epoxy and twin layers of glass cloth, producing a strong, lightweight and low-maintenance hull. The laid teak decks are epoxy bonded to marine plywood sub-decks and finished with beautifully crafted Sapele and Iroko trim throughout.
A Thurton Foundry cast lead fin keel is securely fastened with substantial A4 stainless steel keel bolts, whilst a redesigned spade rudder and ash tiller provide light, responsive handling both under sail and when manoeuvring. The standard of craftsmanship throughout reflects her professional build and attention to detail, resulting in a yacht that is as practical to own as she is beautiful to admire.
