The Mirage 28 is a five berth bilge keel masthead sloop with a separate heads compartment and good headroom, designed by David Feltham and built by Thames Marine in 1982 (fitting out believed to be by original owner).

 

Construction

White Painted GRP hull, deck (Painted by vendors 2012), coachroof and self draining cockpit. Interior joinery of mahogany and mahogany faced marine ply. Twin keels with iron ballast. Skeg hung rudder with tiller steering. Laminated mahogany tiller.

Accommodation

Five berths in two cabins. Red vinyl upholstery. Carpet. V berth fwd. Head with Jabsco manually operated sea type WC fitted 2013, wash basin, cold only pressure water and storage. Two settee berths in saloon. Galley with Origo spirit stove, s/steel sink, cold only pressure water and stowage for utensils etc. Quarter berth. Large chart table and good chart stowage. Ample stowage throughout. 

Engine

1988 Vetus M2.06 15HP Twin cylinder diesel engine. Raw water cooling. Electric start. Engine serviced 2013. Direct drive to a three blade fixed pitch propeller through a mechanical reduction gearbox with reverse.

Electrics

2 x sealed 12v batteries (2011 & 2013) charged by engine driven alternator. 12v lighting throughout. Standard navigation lights & deck light. Masthead navigation lights renewed 2013. 240 shore power with two outlets below, car type 12v socket for charging mobile phones etc and extension cable.

Tankage

10 gallon s/steel fuel tank.

20 gallon s/steel fresh water tank.

Deck Equipment

S/steel stemhead fitting, pulpit, sternguard, Tannoy ventilator and boarding ladder on stern. Alloy perforated toe rail, 4 x mooring cleats, stanchions, bases, headsail sheet tracks and main sheet track with traveller. Cockpit spray hood frame (needs new hood). Teak hand rails port and Starboard. Boathook. Mooring warps. Set of inflatable fenders.

Lewmar two speed 16 Genoa sheet winches.

Sails

Red mainsail cover. 2006 mainsail. 2004 roller genoa (needs new UV strip). Storm jib.

Spars and Rigging

Black alloy tabernacle stepped mast and slab reefing boom with lazyjacks. Wood bowsprit. 2009 1 x 19 s/steel wire standing rigging. 2009 Furlex headsail furling gear. Terylene running rigging with main halyard and kicker led back to cockpit. Windex on mast. Windex at masthead.

Navigation Equipment

Plastimo bulkhead type helmsman’s compass. 2002 Clipper echo sounder, log / speedo and wind speed / direction (Serviced and new masthead unit fitted 2013). Lowrance 5150c chart plotter with UK coverage. Cobra VHF R/T. Barometer. Autohelm tiller pilot. Good size chart table.

Safety Equipment

Manual Bilge pump.

Horseshoe lifebuoy with light. Jackstays. 

Fire extinguisher. Fire blanket. 2002 Cyclops radar reflector mounted on mast.

Simpson Lawrence manual anchor winch.

Sea anchor.

Danforth and Bruce anchors. 20m of 10mm chain. 30m of 8mm chain.

FYS Comments

The Mirage 28 is a typical bilge keel family cruiser of the 1980’s, solidly built and easily handled. “ZIMMER” with her additional sail area provided by the bowsprit, should have a pretty good turn of speed.
