Fox’s Yacht Sales Beneteau Owner’s Weekend

30th June 2018

The 19th annual Fox’s Yacht Sales Beneteau Owner’s Weekend was put in the diary in January and at that stage who knew how glamorous the day would be for sailing!

Pre-start manoeuvres mainly involved a game of dare as to who would be the first boat to tuck a reef in. In 18 knots of breeze and for the reach out to Pennyhole the majority of the fleet stuck with full sail and one very game competitor hoisted his furling asymmetric – he didn’t unfurl it!

The start was won by “Mr Blue Sky” who flew off like a frightened rabbit. “Viking Blue”, the biggest boat in fleet was an impressive sight charging through the fleet arriving at the first mark with a clear lead.

The first foul tide beat from Pennyhole to the Fox’s racing mark split the fleet, some going left looking for tidal shelter and some going right on a more making tack. The Oceanis 35’s relished the upwind and rounded Fox’s racing mark 1st, 2nd and 3rd on the water.

The downwind leg back to Pennyhole gave the crews a bit of a chance to re-hydrate and grab a sandwich whilst logging some impressive numbers in the SOG challenge for bragging rights in the bar! Meanwhile the breeze was increasing to over 20 knots.

The Oceanis 35’s rounded Pennyhole for the second beat pretty much together with “Vixen” just leading from “FiFi” and “Extra Old”. It was setting up nicely for a 3 boat match race at the front. Meanwhile there were battles aplenty throughout the fleet with the smallest boat, “Dotty”, gamely hanging on to the coat tails of some much bigger boats.

“Vixen” rounded Fox’s Racing mark just in front of “FiFi” and “Extra Old” with a three mile drag race back into the harbour to the finish. The rubber band holding these three together never seemed to get stretched despite furious trimming from all crews!

“Vixen” crossed the finish line first to a deafening silence. An infringement had been picked up by the on-water jury and they were therefore disqualified. “FiFi” were next over the line followed closely by “Extra Old”.

Once the handicaps had been applied the results were as follows –

FYS 18th BENETEAU OWNERS WEEKEND 2017

Fleet FYS BOW 17_63

The 18th FYS Beneteau Owners weekend was held on the Saturday the 1st of July following the now traditional format of a morning trot round the cans off Dovercourt Bay with a river race on the Orwell and Stour in the afternoon.

Three Classes (FIRST under 30’, FIRST over 30’ and OCEANIS) mustered safely just off the Harwich breakwater for the 11.00am, all classes, downwind start.

A pleasant and surprisingly warm 14 knot NNW breeze meant the classes had soon rattled round their respective courses. Line honours went to the FIRST 27.7 “Shazam” albeit the FIRST under 30’ sailed a slightly shorter course.

At 13.45 the river race started with the wind drifting off slightly but still from the NNW and with bright sunshine. A trundle out to Pye End, 2 separate turning marks up the Stour (shorter course for the smaller FIRSTS’), then up to Orwell number 3 was the prescribed course. As the sea breeze filled in the small Firsts managed to wiggle through the “Doldrums” at Felixstowe quicker than the larger boats. That said, the OOD took the wise decision and shortened the course to finish at Fagbury Point.

After applying the scientifically derived handicaps an extremely close set of results was produced with 2 out of 3 classes going to countback and the OCEANIS fleet finishing over 2 hours racing within 3 minutes of each other on corrected time.

Once again this lighthearted and fun “Regatta” is organised in aid of the RNLI and we would like to thank all our sponsors and supporters for the gifts and prizes and to all the competitors for their donations raising almost £1,000, great effort!     RNLI-logo

FYS 17th Beneteau Owners Weekend

5. FYS Fleet Felixstowe_0768

The program for the day involved two light hearted races, starting from Harwich, the first out to sea, the second in the rivers, Orwell and Stour followed by a prize-giving and BBQ at the Royal Harwich Yacht Club. The boats were split in to 3 Classes – OCEANIS, FIRST (up to 30ft) and FIRST (over 30ft).

The first race saw the 14 boats head out into Dovercourt Bay. With the fleet ranging in size from 21ft to 42ft they soon spread out with the stunning looking FIRST 40 “40 Love”, chartered from East Anglian Sea School for the event leading the way overall and in the FIRST (over 30ft) class. The FIRST (under 30ft) class was led home by fifth time Beneteau owner John in “Gemini” the Beneteau FIRST 25s. The first OCEANIS to finish was Graham’s well sailed OCEANIS 42CC, “Escapade”.

For the second race, after a fairly “exciting” first mark rounding at last years event, it was decided to start the fleet heading out to Pye End buoy (to get some separation) before re-entering Harwich and sailing up the Stour and Orwell Rivers.

This year’s excitement at the second start involved a Thames Barge (racing in the annual Barge match) and a First 211 (either using last years start instructions or with the chart upside down) sailing through the start line in the opposite direction to the fleet. Thankfully all was well. On entering the River Stour, a foul tide beat made the crews work hard, Clive in his new OCEANIS 35, “Lazy Days II” gained many places as he marched up the shore out of the tide. The same boats finished first in each class, although “Gemini” was first to actually finish on a shortened course half way up the River Orwell.
